Why Grails is so groovy - Blog Introduction
Hello World!
My name is Frerk Meyer and 'Groovy Grails and Webby Things' is my new
blog about the web framework Grails and the scripting language Groovy
for the Java platform.
I discovered Grails through the three part tutorial of Dierk Koenig in the german IT magazine 'iX'. I read through Jason Rudolph's book 'Getting started with Grails' and then decided I have to dig deeper into Groovy to get beyond pure scaffolding. A natural development other's will know or follow for sure.
So I worked through the 'Groovy in Action' book from Dierk König. As a long time web developer and architect I really got hooked up on Grails (I've seen the light, as you might say) and I liked Groovy very much. So I decided to start this blog and comment on my adventures in Groovy Grails land.
Being a long time web developer I have experience with CGI/Perl since version 3, PHP since version 2 and Java since version 1.2. On the java plattform I use Spring, Hibernate, JSP, Struts and Tiles. I read about Spring MVC (very flexibel), Spring WebFlow and Sitemesh, but didn't use them until now. So I was more than happy that Grails did choose my favorite web framework components and made interoperability between them so easy.
On the search for the next big thing I was tempted to look into Python oder Ruby (JPython or JRuby that is). But Groovy feels better for me, because it syntax is almost Java and I can use all of my knowledge of Java, the Java Development Kit, Open Source Components and don't have to throw it away and start from scratch.
Grails version 1.0 and Groovy version 1.1
are just about to be released and I believe this is only the beginning.
Both will develop, mature and spread with speed and it is fun to take
an active part on their evolution. I'll begin my contribution by blog
entries as long as it's my hobby interest and not a full time job.

Hi Frerk. Congrats to your new blog! Nice to see the german community growing. Hope to read lots of stuff about Groovy and Grails from your blog - keep groovin', Bernd
